Shane Lowry reacts after missing a birdie putt on the eighth green

Golf’s first major of 2022 got underway on Thursday. Rory McIlroy is making another attempt to finally complete a career grand slam, but it's Shane Lowry who's best of the Irish after three rounds. Here’s all you need to know about the event.

Where and when is it on?

As ever, the tournament takes place at at Augusta National in Georgia. This year’s edition started on Thursday April 7 and will finish on Sunday April 10.

Shane Lowry has a bad final 10 holes on Saturday and, although he'll be out in the second last group, is seven shots behind leader Scottie Scheffler after the Offalyman's third round 73 left him on two under.

Rory McIlroy is three shots further back after his 71, while Seamus Power at least has the experience of making the weekend but is now six over.

Where can I watch it?

Sky Sports will bring subscribers all the action with coverage on both the Main Event and Golf channels.

What’s the Irish interest?

There's plenty of Irish involvement this year. In addition to Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry, Seamus Power is making his Augusta debut and Padraig Harrington returned to the field for the first time in seven years as a result of his joint fourth place finish at the 2021 PGA Championship.

Lowry is the pick of the bunch at halfway with McIlroy and Power digging deep to survive the cut but Harrington will be rueing errors after missing out by a single shot.

Anything extra to watch out for?

All eyes have been on Tiger Woods after he made his return, less than 14 months after suffering serious injuries in an horrific car crash in February 2021.

Woods, who feared shortly after the accident that his right leg would have to be amputated, has not contested a top-level event since the 2020 Masters, which was played in November that year, but is still in the mix after making the cut although on +7 after the third round he won't be contending.
