9/11 Columbus-area events: Ceremonies, stair climb remember attacks

From a memorial stair climb to the Ohio Statehouse's annual flag display, a number of local events are planned for the 21st anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

The commemorations come one year after the United States completed its withdrawal from Afghanistan, ending America's longest running war.

In the 2001 attacks, 19 terrorists hijacked four jetliners, crashing two into the World Trade Center in New York and one each into the Pentagon near Washington, D.C., and a field in Pennsylvania. They left nearly 3,000 dead and resulted in lingering health issues for thousands of first responders who worked at ground zero, including increased risk of cancer.
